Centos 6 Released - at last
Centos 6.0 has finally been released..
Hopefully going to see if i can get all my C5 based services running on C6 - the big one being asterisk.
quote:The CentOS team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of CentOS-6.0 for i386 and x86_64 Architectures.
CentOS-6.0 is based on the upstream release EL 6.0 and includes
packages from all variants. All upstream repositories have been combined into one, to make it easier for end users to work with.
Asterisk memories
OK so months, or maybe years who knows, ago I set up my Asterisk box with my localphone account then forgot about it. It just works...
Anyway today i decide i want to test out Scientific Linux 6, in either preparation to move to Centos 6 or even move to SL 6 not quite decided, so I moved over and configured my email stuff (postfix, dovecot, roundcube, fetchmail etc) from memory which to be honest is fairly trivial as I don't have a complicated setup most works straight out-of-the-box. I then realised oh crap, I need to transfer asterisk.
Podcast Heaven
Up until recently I haven't really bothered with podcasts, I found that ones from Radio are, although funny, get quite boring without the music usually played along side chat and with the techie based ones, call me racist but, I can't be doing with listening to nasal american drawl.
However, as a subscriber to Linux Format I noticed a lot of mentions of the Tuxradar podcast so decided to give it a go, I was pleasantly surprised. Covering quite a broad range of topics and being able to digest the info while working was great..
Amazon Fiasco
I've always been reasonably impressed with Amazon, they have done a few things quite well.
Decent online bookstore
Nice ebook reader (Richard Stallman would kill me for saying that, but I like mine)
Proving "Cloud" computing is a disaster waiting to happen or should I say, happened.
Their North Virginia EC2 and relational database services have been down now for getting on 36 hours. Its just not cricket....
Especially when i come to put in my new shiny XBMC media centre and come to scan the movies and find themoviedb.org is down as its hosted by Amazon Web Services - DOH!
Think we're back
Missing a few modules at the mo, but i can add them as and when....
Started from a new drupal install over the same database and all looks good so far...
its all gone pete tong
Think i'm going to have to rebuild this 'ere blog/site... its all gone pear shaped... too much too wrong!
uh-oh
Mirroring a repository
More for my own benefit but handy to use.
this script will mirror a yum repository for local use.
Media Centre update
OK so dumb ass me bought the OEM version of the CPU, this means no cooler DOH!!! I've ordered one which will be better than the stock cooler but it won't be here till next week...
New media centre kit
Ooh, new kit should be arriving today... muchly excited..
got a decent deal actually, gone for a ZOTAC H55ITX-A-E motherboard, Intel i3 540 and 4gb RAM..
should do nicely, and hopefully be nice and quiet at the same time :-)
Build speeds update
Well I rebuilt the same os configuration on an older piece of hardware yesterday, not much older but the last generation of Intel chips (Core2), the later OS etc seemed to make a difference. Well lets put it this way it shaved a good 10 minutes off the same build as on the i5..
Just need to get em to parallellise the build process so that it will use all cores.
